UPDATE 2: Evidently I may have jumped the gun by saying they were go to use the name again. This is what I get for posting information that I got fourth or fifth-hand.
UPDATE: Apparently knitters = big into letter writing. The USOC has apologized, and Ravelry is free to once more use the term “Ravelympics.” Hopefully they won’t mind if our little bit of satire stays up
We’ll have the next haiku strip up later today, and we can all get back to what’s important: making cool stuff!
We interrupt your regularly scheduled Haiku strip to bring you this bit of lameness from the U.S. Olympic Committee! For more details, see this news story.
ADELE: You joining our little training group, Cam?
CAM: Heck yeah! I'm getting ready for the Ravelympics!
Panel 2:
SE: SCREECH!!
CAM: MRF! MRF!
Panel 3:
MAN: Remember to cheer on the US Olympic Team of 2012 by buying official, authorized merchandise only.
Panel 4:
MAN: Also, knitting is stupid.

Hey. Leave off. They’re literally BOUND to do it.

I don’t mind that the USOC is enforcing their trademark — as you point out, they’re legally obligated to do so. I DO mind that they went out of their way to be unnecessarily insulting while doing so. I think describing them as jerks is completely fair.
Nobody is BOUND to be a douchebag, not even lawyers.
While I understand that they had to issue the c&d, that they own/need the trademark and that their letter was from one lawyer to another lawyer, I thought this was hilarious. I literally lol at the last panel.
Been a bit more offline than usual, so missed this brouhaha when it started. Will be interesting to see how it plays out in the strip (and RL)!
Hilarious! The “Also, knitting is stupid” part made me snort. How did I miss this comic?? Bookmarking now!
I WAS DRINKING WHEN I READ THIS! Thanks…now I need to clean the computer screen. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Ravelry can use the term “Ravelympics”? o.O Where did that news come from?
What Melody said. The insult to knitters is gratuitous! And rude. No handmade socks for you! Didn’t Mo Rocca on NPR get in trouble for insulting knitters, and then he learned to knit?
Ha, this basically sums up the whole letter. “You can’t use our trademark” (ok, fair enough) “by using it on a stupid thing like knitting.”
Their apology was priceless. “We still don’t think knitting is cool enough for us to do but if you’d like to make us stuff, for free, go right ahead. We wear a size 10 shoe, a L in sweaters and a size 25″ hat.” *eyeroll*
Priceless.
